Santa Fe Turkey Burger

  • 1 medium jalapeño pepper
  • 1 medium red bell pepper
  • 1 (20 ounce) package ground turkey
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • ½ teaspoon fresh garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1/3 cup fresh cilantro leaves (chopped)
  • 8 (¾ ounce) slices American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns (sliced)

Heat gas grill to medium or charcoal grill until coals are ash white.

Place whole jalapeño and red bell pepper on grill. Cook, turning often, 8-10 minutes or until most of the skin is blackened. Cool 10 minutes. Remove stems and seeds of peppers. Slice jalapeno into 12 thin strips. Cut bell pepper into 8 pieces. Set aside.

Combine turkey, cumin, salt, pepper, garlic and cilantro in bowl. Shape mixture into 4 patties. Flatten each patty to 4 inches.

Place patties onto grill. Grill, turning once, 12-16 minutes or until internal temperature reaches at least 165° F and meat is no longer pink in center. Top each burger with 2 slices cheese. Continue grilling 1-2 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Place burgers onto bottom half of buns. Top each with 3 slices grilled jalapeño pepper and 2 slices grilled red bell pepper. Top with remaining half of buns.
